Spotlight on Juvenile Sex Trafficking: My Experience at the JuST Conference
In November of 2023, I was honored to attend the annual JuST Conference hosted by Shared Hope International. This gathering is a cornerstone event in the anti-trafficking field, shining a light on the critical issue of juvenile sex trafficking. It’s a space where experts, survivors, and advocates come together to share knowledge, experiences, and strategies for combating this heinous crime. One of the highlights of the conference was the opportunity to showcase the K-12 curriculum that I have been deeply involved with. After a successful pilot program in Duval County, Florida, it was incredibly rewarding to share our work with a broader audience. This curriculum is designed to educate children of all ages about trafficking awareness and prevention, equipping them with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe. The conference was an immersive experience, with presentations and workshops focused on various topics, from skill-building and survivor experiences to cross-discipline collaboration and task force development. Each session offered valuable insights into the complexities of trafficking and the multi-faceted approach required to address it effectively.
One of the most powerful aspects of the JuST Conference is its emphasis on survivor experiences. Hearing firsthand accounts from those who have lived through trafficking is both humbling and motivating. It’s a stark reminder of the human impact of this crime and the importance of our continued efforts to combat it.
The conference also highlighted the importance of collaboration across different disciplines. It’s clear that ending trafficking requires a coordinated effort from law enforcement, educators, healthcare professionals, and community members. By working together, we can develop more effective strategies and make a greater impact.
Reflecting on my experience at the JuST Conference, I’m filled with a renewed sense of purpose. The knowledge and connections gained during this event have strengthened my resolve to continue fighting against trafficking in all its forms. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a world where no child is subjected to this form of exploitation.
In solidarity, Tanya
